Thyroid Nodule Symptoms
Thyroid nodules are usually asymptomatic. However, depending on their size, they may press on neighboring tissues like the trachea, causing a wide array of symptoms. Some of the symptoms associated with thyroid nodules may include:1
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Foreign body sensation in the neck
- Enlarged neck
Additionally, nodules that are active may cause symptoms associated with excess thyroid hormone release. Common symptoms seen in patients with hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules may include:2
- Tachycardia
- Sweating
- Tremors
- Anxiety
- Unexplained weight loss
- Heat intolerance
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (usually diarrhea)
- Bulging eyes, also known as exophthalmos (rare)
On the other hand, some rare conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may cause hypothyroidism. The symptoms associated with this autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland may include: 2
- Dry skin
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Cold intolerance
- Constipation
- Menstrual irregularities
- Depressed mood
Even though most thyroid nodules are benign, some signs and symptoms have been linked with a higher incidence of malignancy. Some of the key factors associated with thyroid cancer include:1
- Firm and fixed nodules
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
- Patients younger than 20 years old and/or older than 70 years
- Prior history of thyroid carcinoma
